Re: [Philmont]: Camp Shoes

I thought I would put together the final outcome of people's responses both
off list and on list regarding Camp Shoes.

1) Go with shoes that are light to carry
2) Go with shoes that have a low profile tread so it does not further
damage the camping areas.
3) Old tennis shoes work good
4) Don't use tennis shoes or hiking boots for rock climbing, the slip on
the rocks.
5) No open toed shoes in camp in case you spill hot food on your foot.
6) Make sure the shoe can be easily slipped on for those middle of the
night trips
7) The shoes may have to be worn has your hiking shoe if you have boot
problems. So they need to be strong and have a good tread.
8) They should wick moisture away if you do have to use them for hiking.
9) You may want to use them to cross creeks and keep your boots dry.
Rebutted by, there are plenty of rocks to step on when crossing creeks.

Conclusion:

Looking at 2 & 3 you would think tennis shoes would be a solution, until you
get to # 4. So, forget tennis shoes.

Looking at 5 & 6 & 7, you better not spill any food on your shoes if you
plan on keeping them in or near your tent at night to easily slip them on.
And if they are easy to slip on, then they must be easy to slip off, so
therefore not very good for # 7 or # 4.

Some people use tennis shoes, trail shoes, water shoes, moccasins, and some
ignore the rules and still plan on using open toed sandals.

Bottom line, bring boots, tennis shoes, and a hiking shoe just in case you
have to hike, climb or spill food on your shoes. I'm being cynical here,
because for every answer given, there was someone out there saying it was
the wrong answer. I've made my decision on what I'm going to bring, and I'm
keeping that decision to myself.

BTW - I'm a Scout, not an adult. All I can say is that the Scouts that
replied made more sense than the varing reponses from most of the adults.

Thank you all for your input. Like hiking/backpacking boots, its all in the
individual preference.

See you on the trail.
