I cannot speak for Black Jack Camp, but I have twice done the hike from
New Dean over the ridge and down into Bear Canyon (BJC is basically on
the crest of the ridge, a little further south). The trail from the
ridge down into Bear Canyon is difficult - steep and tight with scrub
oak. It will be a challenge coming up, and that's a fact. Without my
map handy (translation - I'm too lazy to go get it), I'll guess 750 feet
of elevation gain. I strongly suggest an early start; Bear Canyon is
notorious for being an airless oven after mid-morning, when the sun hits
the canyon floor. Two points in your favor: First, it's not a very
long hike; and Second, the views of the canyon as you're going up the
side of the ridge are just spectacular. We actually did this hike
intentionally (that is, from Santa Claus to New Dean, then over the
ridgeline and down into the canyon), for the views. And I gotta think
that BJC must have some great views, either from the camp or closely
nearby. But I'll leave that to someone who knows....

PS - I try to not publicize my Scouting resume - direct proof of mental
illness is not a pretty sight.... :)
