I highly recommend the trekking poles with the shock absorbers for
the downside of the mountains. This is where most knee injuries
occur. If you are planning on using them in the East where
humidity is high you might want to consider the cork handles. In
the summer when your hands are sweating the cork handles give
you a better grip than the rubber handles. At Philmont the cork
handles do not matter. I have used mine for two Philmont treks and
the backpacking I do on the Appalachian Trail here in Georgia. I
would not dream of doing Trek #20 this summer with my trekking
poles.
