[Philmont]: RE: Questions on trek 28

We did trek 20 last year and passed by Black Jacks camp on our way to
Turkey Creek. The camp is along the ridgeline and appeared to be pretty
much unused and was back among lots of trees. I don't know about the views
from the camp as we stayed on the trail. There was a small pond on the left
side of the trail past the campsites, it had a little bit of water in it
but it sure didn't look too fresh. Lots of mud surrounding it and it was
in direct sunlight. We saw several deer walking through the woods as we
passed by Black Jacks camp. I suspect the pond is the only water source
for all the animals in the area and it would need to be treated well.

I looked at the itinerary for trek 28 and the previous night you are at
Cimarron River camp. The river is your water source there. Since it passes
beside the highway and through fields and pastures, the pollution potential
is high and it should be double treated to make sure it's safe. There will
likely be a lot of clay in the water also. There appears to be a creek
along the trail through Bear Canyon and I would suggest refilling water
bottles there in case the pond at Black Jacks camp is low/dry. Early the
next day you will pass by the well/stock tank at New Dean camp on your way
to Miranda. Its going to be a long day hiking so get an early start.
