Jerry asked: "...can you remember when you left Crater and
when you arrived at Miners, or, if not those details, the
amount of time it took to hike it?"
I do not remember the times exactly, but can tell you that a
highly motivated Crew can cover the distance from Crater to
Miners in 45 minutes to an hour. As I recall, it's a great
trail, and a slightly downhill grade most of the way. When
we tried to make the program, we failed. We pulled into
Miners around 9:45 after a slower than expected morning
start (Ranger goodbyes and final advice...). At the time,
there was a 10 am climb that had met at 9:30 to hike up the
hill to betty's bra (the name of the formation you climb at
Miners). We played around on the climbing wall for a few
minutes, and headed on to Black. If you do get to climb, be
sure to load up your packs and take them with you. The
trail to the climbing area is the same as the trail to N
Fork Urraca. Where you fork off to go to the climb area
there are bear cables and you can drop your packs. Once you
head on to Black (as others have said) expect to get wet (or
at least very tired of creek crossings) on the trail from N
Fork Urraca to Black. Best estimate, 53 stream crossings,
hope it's been dry.
Another option for this day is to head to Black by way of
Trail Peak. In 93 we did our conservation work near
Beaubien on our layover day and missed the opportunity to
climb Trail. This is a round-about route to Black Mountain,
but given the short day going to Beaubien from Black and the
layover day once there, what's a few extra miles. You could
easily do the morning program at Black before heading over
the ridge to Beaubien. That hike is probably no longer that
the trip from Craters to Miners (but not all down hill)
Jerry continued " Second, and most important of all,
were/are there one or two climbing sessions in the morning
at Miner's Park? What time(s)?"
I think in 1993 there was only the one, but things change.
That is a question best saved for logistics in basecamp.
There is about a 30 minute hike from camp to the climbing
area,
