If and only if you have a very fast Crew, you can make lunch at Basecamp
from Clark's Fork (my Crews have done so multiple times, including since
when the Tooth Ridge Trail was lengthened). Bring 3 liters each of
water minimum (4 would be better). Don't even think about the Spring at
Schafers Pass if you intend to make it to Basecamp for Lunch; if flows
way too slow - you'll be stuck there forever, and that's assuming no-one
else is already there. Leave at dawn. Limit the time on top of the
Tooth to max 45 minutes - this is usually enough for everyone to call it
a view, so you're not "rushing" it (i.e., ruining it in your haste to be
gone). With luck, you will be behind the Schaefers Pass and Upper
Clark's Fork side camps on the Tooth, but ahead of most of the other
Clark's Fork, North Fork Urraca, and Miner's Park Crews - it can
otherwise get crowded up there.
If previous experience has shown that your Crew isn't that fast, or if
they will have trouble getting out of bed after the Clark's Fork
Campfire the previous night, just get the trail lunch and enjoy a more
leisurely day. Remember, it's not a race, and the Tooth is the real
finale of Philmont - the hike to Basecamp is just a PITA.
