A couple of quick points on the first part of the trek - haven't been past Mt.
Phillips:
Lover's Leap is a nice starting camp. Trail up to Uracca has some of the most
spectacular vistas of the Tooth of Time at the ranch especially from Stonewall
Pass.
Don't miss Inspiration Point at Uracca - your ranger will probably do the
Wilderness Pledge there - but if s/he doesn't you might ask them to. It really
is inspirational, particularly at sunrise.
Relatively easy day from Uracca to Abreu - downhill for the most part. But no
shade either so you might want to get an early start.
Abreu to Fish Camp is a beautiful hike. The first part is open/no shade, but
after "The Notch" nice views all around.
Depending on your route, you might want to hang your bear bags at Bear Canyon
and the hike to Apache Springs with just your raingear, water etc.
I also don't know if its practical or not, but if you pick up all of the food
for the 4 days from Bear Canyon to Sawmill at PJ the first time, you can avoid
a stop going back to PJ on your way to Crooked Creek. You might also check the
route from Crooked Creek to Clear Creek via Wild Horse. Not as flat as up the
Rayado, but could be more scenic. But it could delay your crew's arrival into
Clear Creek.
Try to catch the mountain man program at Clear Creek in addition to filling up
with water. Mt. Phillips is nice, but not much to do except watch the scenery
so no need to get there too early - just make it in time for sunset.
You might als see if you can work in the program at Harlan on your way to
Vaca. If you get the shotguns there, plus 30.06 at Sawmill and can work in
blackpowder at Clear Creek, you will have made you own "Death and Destruction"
trek. Again, Vaca is a trail camp, so no sense getting there too early if you
have a chance to take in more program.
Hope this helps and plan on having the time of your life - You Will!
Happy Trails
