[Philmont]: homemade tents

This is my first trip to Philmont, and I also am considering making my own
lightweight tent--a modified tarptent. I have no experience to draw on, but
here is my strategy for avoiding run-ins with the nature police:

1. Removable, breathable nylon panels to attach to the tent walls (with
velcro squares). If the walls are required to be opaque, I'm covered. If
not--and when travelling in the rest of the world--I can leave them behind.
These should also make the tent better suited for cool and cold weather.

2. A mesh floor with a silnylon panel in the center. Again, in the long term
this adds almost no weight, since the silnylon panel can take the place of a
ground cloth. Besides keeping the nature police happy (yeah, I'm sure they
have a lot of cases where bears tunnel up through the bottoms of tents),
this makes the tent completely bugproof.

3. This has nothing to do with Philmont, but I intend to skip the zipper and
make a simple tunnel opening. The zipper is always the weakest point of the
tent.

4. Keep in mind also that the tent needs to be large enough for two without
gear (Philmont tents have a footprint of 5' by 7'), which is also a
reasonable size for one with gear.
