[Philmont]: Quest for Fire

We needed a 3rd lightweight stove; and I wanted a 2nd Coleman Max Xtreme (the
3-legged one) to go with our 1st one and a Dragonfly. Our local REI store was out
(fortunately, as it turned out) and wasn't expecting any more within the foreseeable
future. Odd, I thought. I found one (his very last one) at my local Backwoods store
and bought it for $46 (retail is $80). Odd, I thought. I asked him why? how?

He reports Backwoods isn't going to be carrying them anymore. Something about has
been almost impossible to get them and keep them in regular stock. Also, they are
going to feature the MSR stoves, saying that most advanced 'packers seem to prefer
the squatty-body canisters, now. Besides, he said, you can get those canisters
anywhere. "Not at Philmont," I said. "In fact, the only pressurized fuel Philmont
sells is the Powermax canister for the Xtreme." The Backwoods guy swallowed hard and
said, "Oh, I didn't know that."

It appears Coleman may have not reached the hearts and pocketbooks of our countrymen
with the Xtreme. Sad, sad, sad, if that's so. It's the best non-white gas stove out
there for my money. My Max version (3-legs) puts out 14,500 BTU. The supposedly
hottest white gas stove (and reportedly the best) Optimus Nova ($130) only gives up
9700 BTU; and that's on a good day with not much wind! I've had my Xtreme working
near Wheeler Peak, NM in 53" of snow at ~18 degrees and at 11,200'. Absolutely no
prob-lem-o.

I surely hope this is all a big false alarm and Coleman's just targeting other areas
of the country harder. Whatever's going on, I certainly hope they at least keep the
Powermax cartridge in production for a long, long time. If you've been considering
an Xtreme, however, it might be a good idea to go ahead while you can find it in
stock.
