RE: [Philmont]: Trek #1

Our crew did Trek 18 in 2000, and one of the many postings I've seen about
Black Mountain is the fact that it's trails aren't very good, which I'll
personally vouch for as we took followed what looked like the most traveled
way down, instead of using the good old map and compass like we should have.
However with that said, the top of Black Mt is one of the best view points
you'll get on your trek if you decide to go that way. I know I'll always be
glad we were on top of it. As far as program goes, it would have been nice
to done some more, but I really believe seeing some of God's Country from on
high is a good program! As far as hiking back to Beaubien for another
Chuckwagon, while the food was hot, it was Dennymore beef stew, right out of
the can, nuf said, I wouldn't hike back for it.
We hiked past Miners Park and did the Rock Climbing program, that was a lot
of fun for our Scouts, the Staff did a great job.

Request for possible side-itinerary opportunities

Gentlemen, please take a look at what we are going to put out at our next
planning meeting. We got Trek #1 (not our first choice), and wanted the
crew to think about options now (details deleted):

...Day 7 = Black Mountain: 7 miles/2500 ft gain (there are rumours that the
trail off Black mtn is not good. There is an alternate route that skips the
climb & goes to more Program. Choices are at:
- Miner's Park Camp: Climb Big Red/Rock Climbing (about 11 miles)
- Black Mtn Camp = Mountain Livin', blacksmithing, black powder rifle shoot
Day 8 = Buck Creek: 5 miles/1000 ft gain/loss, Trail Camp
As we pass through Beaubien we could catch Program there: Western Lore,
Horsies, showers. There is an alternate route through Comanche Camp at 10
miles that catches the Rocky mtn Fur Company program. We could also
day-hike back to Beaubien for another Chuckwagon Dinner instead of packing
it.
