Drop the pillow, the fleece jacket is a good substitute. Although, now I am
wondering if that is a bad bear policy? Drop the individual bug repellant.
Reportedly, there are minimal bugs at Philmont and a single container for
the crew should be enough.
Also, what is purell?
Have fun,
Mark

Subject: [Philmont]: Gear Suggestions
This year is the first time I will ever have gone to Philmont. Our
expedition is 623-K, for our Council Contingent. Anyway, I have gone
backpacking before, and know what is needed for a basic backpacking trip.
But Philmont is different in several ways, and I need help deciding what I
really need and don't need. My goal for pack weight without water and crew
gear is 15-17 lbs. So, here is the list of items I plan on taking:
Pack - Outbound Products Mountain Guide 95 (Internal Frame)(detachable
hippack and daypack)(with accessories)(88 oz)
EZ Access Items - Sunscreen, Bug Repellant, 2 Bandannas, Princeton Tec
Aurora Headlamp w/batteries (22.5 oz)
Sleeping Bag - L.L. Bean LiteLoft 20 deg. Rectangular (53.5 oz)
Sleeping Pad - Ridge Rest 3/4 w/stuff sack (10 oz)
Sleeping Stuff - pillow, sleeping clothes, eyeglass case, compression sack
(13 oz)
Water - CamelBak StoAway, 1 white 32 oz Nalgene, 2 clear 20oz Nalgenes (21
oz)
Rain Gear - 1 pr. OR Crocodiles (gaiters), Marmot Precip Rain Suit
(pants/jacket) (31 oz)
Clothes (In Pack) - fleece pullover w/hood, 2 pr. liner socks, 2 pr. heavy
socks, 2 pr. underwear, 1 shirt (37 oz)
Utility Kit - repair kit, 3 1 gal. ziplocs, 2 2 gal. ziplocs, 2 30 gal.
trash bags, 16' parachute cord, emergency blanket, 2 web straps, 1 pen, 1
pencil, 14 sheets of paper (crew journalist!)(17.5 oz)
Toiletries - 1/2 roll tp, 1 sm. bar of soap, 1 packtowl, 1 sm. toothbrush, 1
sm. bottle toothpaste, 1 very sm. case of orthodontic wax (13 oz)
Eating Gear - 1 lexan bowl, 1 lexan cup, 1 lexan spoon (6 oz)
TOTAL: 322 oz = 20.125 lbs
Wearing - pants, shirt, liner socks, heavy socks, underwear, boots, compass,
whistle, lighter, sm. pocketknife, purell, sm. deck of cards, glasses,
chapstick, hat, trekking poles.
So, I can't decide from here what is essential/nonessential. I can't get a
new pack, almost can't get a new sleeping bag, but other than that, I can
subtract almost anything, hopefully enough to reach my goal of 15-17 lbs.
Other good suggestions are what to share/lighten up on.
I don't need suggestions on what to ADD, though!
See my other message on crew gear I will add soon, too!
Thanks so much for your help; I am really really looking forward to
Philmont!
