In addition to the personal water bottles on Philmont's equipment list, we have each crew member, as part of their equipment, bring two 2-liter soda bottles (thoroughly washed out with soap and water to remove all traces of soda). The two bottles are tied
 together with a 3 foot length of sturdy cord. This allows the bottles to be draped over the top of an external frame backpack where they are secured to the sides with a strap so they don't flop around while you hike. We use them to carry extra water when

And, given the bear problems at Philmont these days, it's probably a good idea to hang them on the bear cable at night since they DID have soda in them at one time. As a minimum, they should not be left near the sleeping area.
