The tarp is set up like an old fashioned pup tent. You will need three
lengths of parachute cord to rig your tarp. Two of them will be threaded
through the grommets along the sides of the tarp. Tie the cord to the corner
grommet with two half hitches and thread it through the grommets. After you
have threaded the cord through the last grommet along the side, double the
cord back on itself and tie a tautline hitch so you can adjust the cord. Use
the third cord as the ridge support cord. At each end, tie a tautline hitch.
Put the cord UNDER the ridge of the tarp. At the grommet at each end of the
ridge, pull a loop up through the grommet and double it back on itself. This
is a lark's head knot. When you double it back on itself, put a SMALL twig
in the loop that is formed when it is doubled back on itself. This twig
should be able to break should you get a high wind. Tie the ridge line to
the poles using a clove hitch. This way, no single grommet will be ripped
out if you should get a windstorm. The lines along the sides will move at
the tarp moves and the ridge line supports the tarp, while not actually being
tied to it.
It is important for your crew to be able to get your tarp up quickly. We
have had to do it twice when hailstorms came in quickly. Our crew dropped
packs, got the tarp up and stayed warm and dry together while the storm raged
around us. One way to have your crew practice tarp set up is by having them
do it everytime you hold a crew meeting. Our goal was to have the tarp out
of a backpack and up in less than two minutes!!! Give it a try.
I know there is a picture of a Phil tarp set up somewhere on the internet
because I have seen it. Selden, do you have a site for it?
