In response to John LeBlanc's request, here are the results of my homework assignment
on the Coleman Max Xtreme (3-legged ver.):
I used 2 Billy pots, the ones Philmont used to issue that I bought when they closed
them out. These are aluminum, 6-qt, outsides painted stove grade black. I didn't
use a lid or windscreen so as to match John's own test. My kitchen is at 640' sl,
the room was 72 and a ceiling fan was providing a PhilBreeze. I did two tests using
cool pots and exactly 4 qts. water. The measuring device was a 400+ degree, high
quality candy thermometer held about half-way in just enough to keep the 180 mark
under water.
The first pot reached 180 in 7 mins. 55 secs. The second reached 180 in 7 mins. 50
secs. Both tests went from 150 to 180 in less than 2 minutes. Both reached full
rolling boil 1 min. after reaching 180. I didn't measure how long to 200 because I'd
never use the stove that high.
Not a lot of difference, I guess, John; but it'd probably add up to some time saving
eventually. One big thing I noticed is I had the stove going full blast within 5
secs. after touching flame to it. There was no priming and no waiting for it to turn
yellow to blue. When I wanted it off, it turned off immediately by turning a cold to
touch knob; and there was absolutely no after burn residual smell of burned gas.
