[Philmont]: First Timers heed the words...

Of Coop Wright! As a First Timer last year, I obsessed over everything. Will we
be able to tolerate the altitude? How difficult is the cooking, water
purification, medical gear, you name it.

I finally took the advice of many posters on this board, and our local Philmont
guru, and concentrated on getting our crew working together as a single unit.
Many training hikes worked out the glitches with regards to cooking, setting up
camp, hanging bear bags, etc. A problem, or a forgotten item was easier to
tolerate, and therefore less of a worry when we were on our home turf and only a
couple of miles from the car. Any problems were noted and corrected for the next
training hike.

When you do your training hikes, try and make believe you are really at
Philmont. You could probably even work on some merit badges along the trail to
simulate program at staff camp. Soon your crew will start clicking along like a
well tuned machine and you'll be able to really enjoy your time at Philmont.

I also urge you to pick the brains of others in your council or district who
have been to Philmont before. My mentor ( THANKS DARRELL!! ) has been many times
and has it down to a science. Everything from getting to Philmont to getting
back home went along without a hitch. He is an invaluable wealth of knowledge
who is more than willing to share his expertise!

Be Prepared so you and your crew can concentrate on having FUN!!

Good Luck, and have a GREAT trek !
