>From the FWIW category, I had two Scouts try fishing at Ponil in (I
think) 1997. The Ponil staff cabin had about 4 or 5 fly-fishing rods
available, plus a minor assortment of flies. There was a nominal fee
for a 3-day (?) license - if memory serves, adults would have been
significantly more expensive.
It had just rained, so Ponil Creek was a muddy, brown mess. I thought
"No way, but be my guest". So Brendan caught 12 trout, average size
maybe 9 inches, and John caught 2 more. Shows what I know. That is the
only success any of my Scouts have ever had fishing, and I suspect
Brendan's dozen trout must be a record for a Scout for a 2 hour stint at
Philmont.
I have seen some pretty good sized fish in Middle Creek, Urraca Creek,
and the Cimarron River - but rarely near any campsite areas. If you
want to bring your own gear (which I would not recommend), I would
suggest that the further you walked before wetting a line, the more
success you'd be likely to experience.
