[Philmont]: Cameras -( probably starting a long discussion thread) :(

I know this will probably start a thread that will go on forever, but I
am going to do it anyway.

We are headed out to Philmont (Trek 18) this summer. I want to take a
camera - note one camera, uno!

I would like people's thoughts on the following:

1) I want it to be small but not tiny - I don't need a monkey cam tied
to my backpack.

2) I want it to run on AA or AAA batteries - I don't want to have to
carry an extra fanny pack stuffed with proprietary batteries just for
this camera.

3) I would prefer DIGITAL and >= 3 megapixels for larger prints when we
get back.

4) If digital, I prefer a camera that uses Memory Sticks or SD cards -
readers and cards I already have and I really don't need another storage
medium - I will need yet another storage medium to store the information
on all the storage media!

5) I like the idea of being able to immediately download my cards to the
computer and create a slide show for the parents - no, I don't think I
will cart the computer along on the trek though.

6) I can be convinced that 35mm or APS is right, if the camera is small
enough and folks have had good results - Canon Elph for example (or
not).

Last time we went I carried a Kodak APS and it ate batteries - the type
that they didn't carry at the commisaries. I have a Pentax 35 mm point
and shoot, but it too heavy and does not do well in low light. I have a
Sony DSC-P5 digital, but it uses special batteries and I can't afford to
buy or carry as many as I will need for the whole trip. I am not about
to carry my Pentax SLR, because I am sure that that will be the one
thing that I drop, fall on, and in general tear up.

Your thoughts are appreciated - I have stepped into my asbestos suit and
am ready to listen.
