While they are physically a bit larger than Secure Digital cards, SanDisk
recently announced 2 gigabyte and 4 gigabyte Compact Flash cards - list
prices about $500 and $1000 respectively but you could get several treks
worth of photos on one, even with the occasional short video. I think that
the 1 gigabyte card is the largest one currently shipping at present, but
since I can get around 1000 reasonable resolution photos on a 512kb card,
that means that all but the most prolific shutterbug could get a whole trek
on one CF card, leaving you worried only about batteries. With my Canon
Powershot G3, it takes a couple of batteries to fill the 512kb card, maybe a
bit more if I use the LCD screen very much. There's some value in being able
to use standard AA batteries, but now that you can get good 3rd party
batteries pretty cheaply it is less of an issue - they don't weigh that
much.
There are some good digital camera review sites out there, including:

I found all of these useful when recently shopping for a digital camera -
although they aren't necessarily evaluating cameras in the context of 12
days in the bush. Most of the newer cameras have reasonable USB connections
to your PC, so having a card reader is less of an issue than it once was. I
have a USB CF card reader but with the new G3 it's easier to just plug the
camera in directly, and not that much slower to transfer.
Here's the announcement about the bigger cards:
