Re: [Philmont]: Cameras -( probably starting a long discussion thread) :(

For the ounce counters among you, my digital postal scale says that my 512mb
SanDisk Ultra compact flash card (enough "film" for about 1000 photos)
weighs 0.4 oz, and my Canon BP-511 Li-Ion battery pack (good for around 400
photos) weighs 2.7 oz. My aftermarket BP-511 clone, with slightly more
power (1300 milli-amp hours instead of 1100) weighs the same. I paid about
$16 for the aftermarket battery, through www. power101.com which seems to
sell only on eBay. If I were going to Philmont (sadly, I'm not this year),
I'd probably take 4 batteries and 2 or 3 of the 512mb CF cards and feel like
I had more than enough capacity.

For reference, on the same scale, a pair of AA alkaline energizer batteries
weighs 1.6 oz, and a 24 exposure roll of 35mm Kodak Max color print film
weighs 0.7 oz without the plastic container, or 0.8 oz with the container.
So digital comes out way ahead on film/media in terms of both size and
weight, and probably a bit better on batteries - I haven't dug out the data,
but it stands to reason that it would take more power to operate a motorized
film transport than to just copy the image to memory, while
focusing/metering would be about even.
