Also keep in mind that the hotel is 120+ years old. I haven't stayed at the
St. James (I may this summer) but have stayed in "older" hotels. In my
experiences, it is not uncommon for the floors to squeak, the rooms to be
drafty, and to lack many of the amenities of a similarly priced newer hotel.
I also find most period furnishings to be uncomfortable compared to the
furniture at home.

As to the difficulty sleeping, well the St. James is purported to be haunted
by at least two spirits from its past. Maybe they were responsible with you
being aware of their presence.
