Re: [Philmont]: Crew Leader

A rotating crew leader is a bad idea in my mind.

Our crew leader has been working with practice hikes and weekend
outings. Who does that when you rotate? Probably and adult advisor.

Our crew divides into three 4 man teams that get an assignment each day
(1.cooking, 2.water purification, 3.bear bags/dining fly/picking a
camp.) Who assigns daily tasks when you have new crew leader each day and
makes sure that everyone gets a fair chance at rotating jobs? That may be
the first day crew leader, or the adult advisor.

Who picks the new crew leader of the day? I guess the adult advisor.

See a trend here. The adult advisor is much more involved than he should
be. If the trek is going badly, the scouts look at the advisor and may
just stop performing.

A better way may be to have the crew leader appoint one scout to be the
point guide that day. The crew leader (and the advisor only as needed)
then helps the point guide with the hiking plan of the day. That gets
everyone involved with compass work and trail planning. It keeps the crew
leader responsible for the overall performance of the crew and keeps the
advisor out of the way until needed.
