FWIW: If I have an all-Troop 111 Crew, I have the Scouts pick the Crew
Chief ONLY before the first shakedown. This is done at the Second
Organizational Meeting (the topic and importance of proper Crew Chief
selection was discussed at the First Organizational Meeting). The
Assistant Crew Chief is then picked by the Crew Chief. This tends to
avoid problems of authority if the Crew Chief vote was close. Using
this method, I have never been surprised at who was voted in, nor
disappointed in the results. This is not surprising, when all the Crew
members know each other well and understand the gravity of the matter.
If it's a Provo Crew, I usually have a "preliminary" self-nomination of
Crew Chiefs (rarely more than 2 or 3 Scouts), then rotate them through
the training hikes, first shakedowns, and 50-Miler Service Project. The
Scouts thus get a chance to see each Provisional Crew Chief in action.
We then hold the vote just before the last Shakedown, same as above, so
that the Crew Chief/Asst. Crew Chief have a full weekend under their
belts before we step on the plane. So far, this has also worked well
for me.
BTW, if it's a provo Crew, I also rotate tentmates on *each* night of
all shakedowns, so that everyone meets someone new each night. You may
have noticed that boys tend to talk to each other when tenting together.
This also tends to get the guys to figure out who they're willing to
follow (or maybe more accurately, who they *don't* want to follow).
This is an excellent Crew building exercise, also.
