Trek 22 was our fifth choice on 6/25/2001. All of the others included Baldy
and walking in over the Tooth. In hindsight, Trek 22 was the best for our
crew (for a lot of reasons Bruce has mentioned already). Starting small and
working up to big days at the end worked well. Also, carrying gear and
sleeping at 11,700 was well worth it.
Other highlights not covered by Bruce:
- Using a Pilot-to-Bombadier "in the middle of no where" on the mesa ridge
overlooking Deer Lake (remember to use a stick to sweep spiders from under
the rim). Amazing views even from a sitting position.
- Walking through Hidden Valley (correct name?) between Ute Spings and
Lambert Mine. Beautiful trail.
- Spotting a bear at 30 yd. just down from the peak at Mt Phillips.
- Opportunity to really use compass skills to find a trail and get off mesa
between Trail Peak and Abreau.
- Getting a photo for my office of my son and me sitting on top of the
Tooth. I look at it often.
I want to go back.
