Re: [Philmont]: Sleeping Bags

I only carry a down bag. The exception to the rule is river trips. Other than that why buy something that historically disintegrates in five years. (Several people are going to tell me about their old synthetic bags, but using a bag a couple nights a year is not use. The synthetic manufactures say the stuff won't last.) Through the 80's and 90's I spent over 100 nights a year in my bags. Synthetic weights a lot and is not as efficient. The argument that youth cannot deal with down is bull. I was 13 on my first philmont trip and carried a down bag that I still have. (It has shrunk a lot since then...............) It is still a great bag, that is now 34 years old.

Check out Mountainsmiths new down bags. They will blow you away.

I can't believe that people avoid down because they cannot keep it dry. Buy a bivy sack and use it. Never unroll your bag until you are ready to climb into. Turn it inside out and throw it on top of the tent to air and dry first thing in the morning and then stuff it.

I own four down bags from a 30 degree bag to a negative 60 degree bag. Nothing beats, matches, compares is as light or as long lasting as down.
