I know that everyone suggests avoiding down bags but I am curious if there
are still those out there that use down? <snip>

Comment...

In 1999, I bought a down sleeping bag from the troop's former scoutmaster,
who had developed physical problems that prevented him from backpacking any
longer. He had used in for his Philmont Trek in 1989, and I do not know how
many times in the ten years after that. I have used it for two summer
treks, two Autumn Adventures, one Sea Base cruise, and who knows how many
shakedowns. And plan on using it both this summer and next autumn. Have had
no problems. Of course, keeping it dry is essential.

So yes, there are those out there that still use down.
