Hi Kevin,
Not everyone suggests avoiding down bags. I have been to Philmont twice and
will be headed back this June. I use a 30 degree down bag and plan to again
this summer at Philmont. I've had no problems and at 49 enjoy the weight
savings. My wife and I have both used down bags on 4 to 10 day section hikes
on the Appalachian Trail also. No problems. I have a Marmot Arryro (sp?) and
she has a Western Mountaineering Hydrogen. Both bags with a stuff sack and a
garbage bag weigh less than 2 pounds each. We are careful to keep them dry,
air them out whenever possible and plan on using a bag liner during our trek at
Philmont.
I haven't used any of the hybrid bags so I can't comment on them.
