RE: [Philmont]: Sleeping Bags

I have only taken down bags to Philmont and most other backpacking trips. I
have 2 models from Marmot each in the 20 degree range. I only bought the
second one because it was lighter by a few ounces. It is a higher grade down
and as I recall only weighs 1.7 lbs. I am a warm sleeper and have typically
gone to Philmont in mid July and have rarely zipped up my bag! I typically
sleep in a silk liner (6 oz) and drape the bag over me like a quilt as I lie
on my Thermarest. I usually take my SD Clip Flashlight tent which is quite
water proof but on the occasion of a big night time storm I usually take the
plastic bag out of the stuff sack and layer it between my feet and the wall
of the tent and have never had any unwanted moisture end up in my bag.

As mentioned by others, take whatever opportunities come your way to air the
bag out to keep it dry. Because youth are not as careful as adults I don't
usually recommend down for them.
