I tend to agree with those that have posted on the nay side of this topic. I
think if you were doing a roll your own style trek this would be great.
But on a trip like that you would be providing all the meals and with that
goes the responsibility of figuring what you will need and what you will be
packing in and out.
I have noticed that over the past few years Philmont has rethought the meals
they provide and upped the amount of carbohydrates and it seems there in no
shortage of breadsticks, crackers and the like. While the idea of supplying
your own for variety sounds good at the surface, it defeats some of the
things that are in the game plan at Philmont. Philmont is not a roll your
own trek. About your only freedom is to pick the trek you want. Unless you
have dietary restrictions you get the food that Philmont supplies. While I
think the food has improved in some areas, it isnt the best backcountry
cuisine you will eat. But one doesnt come there for the food! The beauty of
the Philmont experience is that you pay your fee, pick your trek and train
for it. You show up on the allotted day and you get to experience a high
adventure experience.
Cooking extra side dishes requires time, fuel and water all of which can be
in short supply at Philmont. And cereal in the form of granola or a box
variety is only a meal item on a couple mornings. The time spent in camp
cooking biscuits or muffins would be better spent on the trail getting to
your next camp before a rainstorm or taking in some of the program offered.
Now I imagine there are folks who have taken the Bakepacker and additional
treats to Philmont and would disagree with me. Thats fine. Ive come to the
conclusion that if I was to be allowed to plan my own meals for Philmont I
would go completely stoveless and bring only ready to eat meals that require
no heating, and youre hearing this from someone who always made tea or
coffee with each meal in the past!
