Subject: [Philmont]: No-Pot (or Cup-O-Meal) cooking thought
I've been following this thread with great interest. We will be headed
to Philmont August 1st (crew 802-1c, itinerary 18.... I think 18 ;) )
This will be a first trek for me as well as the remainder of our crew
other than the other advisor who will be on his... 10th trek (11
visits, once to the training center.) My fellow advisor hasn't been on
a trek since the early 90's so many of the techniques and much of the
information I mention hearing from the list is foreign to him. In
addition, the group we're taking is mostly young inexperienced
backpackers (myself pretty much included on the inexperienced part!)
At any rate, I really like the coffee pot and cup-o-meal idea. I think
if you plan to do this and the meals are in 2 serving sized portions,
couldn't you do a similar method but instead of trying to split the
package, just make sure the cup(s) or bowl(s) you use are big enough to
hold the entire amount of food and then split it between your partner
after it has rehydrated. This would eliminate, for instance, one
partner getting all the noodles and the other getting all the sauce (or
similar situations.) If lexan or plastic bowls are used, the additional
weight for a slightly bigger bowl would be negligible. (May even find a
bowl with a lid, then other meal time gear could be stored together
inside the bowl.)
Just a couple thoughts.
See ya on the trail!!
