At any rate, I really like the coffee pot and cup-o-meal idea. I think
if you plan to do this and the meals are in 2 serving sized portions,
couldn't you do a similar method but instead of trying to split the
package, just make sure the cup(s) or bowl(s) you use are big enough to
hold the entire amount of food and then split it between your partner
after it has rehydrated. This would eliminate, for instance, one
partner getting all the noodles and the other getting all the sauce (or
similar situations.) If lexan or plastic bowls are used, the additional
weight for a slightly bigger bowl would be negligible. (May even find a
bowl with a lid, then other meal time gear could be stored together
inside the bowl.)
Comment ...
You missed a point which is a much better idea than carrying extra bowls
AND having to clean them. As you note, the ingredients for some of the
meals will separate in the packages. In that case, thoroughly mix all the
ingredients in one bowl, then divide the dry ingredients between the two
bowls, and finally add boiling water to each. The volume of water added
is always greater than the volume of the ingredients, so they will easily
fit in one bowl that is large enough for half the meal after it is
re-hydrated.
I can't wait to try this method and see if it works as well as I think it
will.
