RE: [Philmont]: Philmont Dining Fly options

Grommet attachment is certainly the weak spot of Tyvek. First we had a set of grommets in the tarp, and during training hikes they worked great. However, at Philmont the combination of wind and rain was too much, and they slowly failed. By the fourth day we had replaced every one with a pebble, strangled by a short piece of parachute cord. We rigged the other end of the cord with a bowline and used that as a surrogate grommet, for the peak toggles and other needs. It wasn't pretty, but worked very well. - robi garcia

As I recall, the Philtechnique for putting up a fly involves threading line through the center grommets, doesn't it?-----Original Message-----

We brought a lightweight Tyvek fly last year, worked very well (though a little noisy in the wind). Cost about $40.00 including lightweight stakes & 20 lb. nylon line; we rigged it the way our Ranger taught us, & had no problems all trek with some pretty significant rain.
