I realize that there are a lot of purists that wouldn't take a cell phone
in the wilderness, and, when I take one, I don't turn it on unless I want
to make a call, because I too don't want to be bothered.

That said, cell coverage is very spotty at Philmont, and last year seemed
to depend on your carrier as well as your location. I got very little
reception in base camp (I use verizon), but another advisor had slightly
better reception (I think he had Suncom or something like that.) Once we
were on the trail, reception improved only slightly - I'd say we probably
got out once or twice during the trek.

However, we did get reception at the top of Mt. Phillips on about day 6 of
our trek. We used this as a check in time back home, and the boys had a
blast calling home and telling their Mom's that they were looking down on
airplanes. I think the Mom's appreciated it also.
