I can agree with Ed to a point, but I would not leave them home.
I do not have one myself. But if you have unlimited or National calling,
why would you drop coins into a pay phone, when you can call back home from
Base Camp fee on a cell phone? Most crews do want to call back when done
just to let the parents know that everyone had all four limbs coming off of
the trail. I would tend to in that case to leave them at base camp and not
take them on the trail.
Buts lets look at the extreme situation. These phones are so small and
weigh so little, that if every crew took one, and over the next 4 years
they saved one life, then it was the right thing to do. If a crew member
does end up in a life threatening situation, and a call to base camp can
get help there 1 hour quicker than sending a crew to the nearest staff
camp, then make the call.
It may not be the purest form of a wilderness experience, but anything to
save the life of a scout is worth while. If the purest form of a
wilderness experience is bringing back a dead body, then we should be
avoiding that type of experience anyway.
Take the phone, bring back the crew.
