RE: [Philmont]: Cell Phones at Philmont

I haven't had experience with reception at Philmont, but if its like any
of the remote areas and a lot of not so remote areas in the Northeast or
Arizona, its extra dead weight. There is no reception except for some
of the higher peaks and most accidents don't occur at the top of the
mountain. I tried bringing one a couple of times until I smartened up
and realized there's no reception. I bring one for use to and from the
trail head and it stays in the car. We have a 2004 trip and it's going
to stay in the gear box at base camp. Of course, if you want to spend
the big bucks, you can always get a satellite phone.

Last year Mark Anderson gave us a cell phone guide to use while on the
trail. Basically he said that if we were going to use a cell phone on
the
trail to call Philmont in an emergency, we were to call the Philmont
Switchboard (505) 376-2281 and not 911. The rationale was that from a
Philmont mountain top the caller could get any number of communities 911
center who are not familiar with Philmont. He quoted that there a
multiple
Mount Philips and Baldy Mountains in the area and that information could
be
confusing to 911 centers out of the area. It would than take a great
deal
of wasted emergency time to get Philmont on the phone. By calling the
Philmont Switchboard directly they would get the proper Health Services
personnel on the phone to assist the crew.

I pass this along as a guide for anyone thinking of bringing their cell
phone. I personally would only have a cell phone for emergencies. My
wish
would be to have it buried deep in my pack and shut off. I go out in
the
wilderness to get away from every day life and relax.
