Sorry to be so long winded, but these tools do have a place. I sure don't
want to be the leader who has to explain to a parent that their child was
denied prompt emergency care because I am a purist and left my cell phone
back at the car.

-------------------------
Between this and the post from Dr. Bob, I believe some excellent points have
been made.

I would like to add one note to Alan's last point here, and that would be
while we all are responsible for the safety of our youth, chances are
greatest that it will be one of the adult members of the crew who has the
heart attack or serious injury while on the trail at Philmont. Why do you
think that those in your crew that have 1st Aid & CPR certifications include
at least one youth member? The Adult with the 1st Aid & CPR cert may be the
one needing it!

Think long and hard about THAT reality check folks.

If you are an '03 advisor still sitting on your duff thinking you are in
shape because you were a work horse 20 years ago, you better start thinking
that your reality check most likely is going to bounce when you hit the
trails of Philmont. By that I don't mean I'm predicting dire injury or
heart attack for you, but I am predicting dire pain & suffering that could
have been avoided with proper conditioning.

You better start extremely serious physical preparation *yesterday* and
don't ignore it any longer. Twice I have been called to action to fill in
as an emergency female advisor when something happened before a trek for
Crews I didn't even know. Once was only 4 weeks before the trek, and my
motto on that scenario is "never again" on such short notice. My
conditioning just wasn't up to par and the whole crew suffered to some
degree as a result of it although we all took home good memories as well.
There would have been more good memories however if the ones caused by less
conditioning were non-existent.
