Two examples of why we should carry one cell phone on a
backpacking trip.

1. Philmont 2000- Bear incident at Mt Phillips- After a bear incident
where two scouts were injured the advisor called the emergency
number at basecamp and was able to get staff assistance from a
nearby staff camp. This allow for medical assistance to be recieved
at least three hours earlier.

2. Last Fall in our area ( Georgia ) a Venture Crew was
backpacking and camped at Jarred Gap on the AT . Early the next
morning before sunrise one of the female teenagers got up for a
restroom visit in the woods. While she was in the woods a hunter
mistook her for a bear and shot. His shot pierced her body near her
heart. Because of the quick first aid and the use of a cell phone by
the adviser, medical personnel was contacted and she was flown to
Atlanta. This was a big story in this area and in the Appalachian
Trail community. She was very lucky and survived this incident.
( This last weekend, I had the opportunity to listen to members of
this Venture Crew explain how they handled this incident at our OA
Conclave They contributed her life being saved because of the cell
phone).

Prior to 2000, I never backpacked with a cell phone. Now I always
carry one and consider it part of our first aid kit. It is kept turned off,
but is ready for an emergency. That I hope and pray that I never
have to deal with on the trail. BE PREPARED!
