Dr. Bob,
There have been recent signs of reanimation from John, so I expect to hear
his two cents soon. However - If both my remaining neurons are still
functioning, I seem to remember John saying that he was bringing along a
cell phone and some sort of magic amplification device on his last trek to
the ranch.
My personal opinion is pretty simple. Use it in base camp if you have the
reception, the national calling plan and the need to do so. Pack it
somewhere safe in your pack for use in an emergency on the trail (following
the appropriate instructions) but do not delay implementing the standard
emergency action plan that your ranger taught and that your crew leader
recorded on his or her map.
Philmont, like most of Scouting, is simple. Just follow the instructions and
you'll do fine. Seek the advice of those with experience and mix it with
your own common sense and you'll do better. Don't try to over-engineer the
darn thing 'cause that is a sure recipe for disappointment.

Since John LeBlanc (doubtless off on a wonderful sojourn somewhere) is
apparently not available to offer his commentary, I beg the List's
indulgence in offering the contrarian view.
