We had four walkie-talkies last year at Philmont. I definitely recommend it. Some of the trails are long and narrow. It allowed the rear person and the lead person to stay in communication with each other. Also, half the group took a side hike from Toothache Springs to Urraca Mesa. Both groups were in communication with each other the entire time. If someone went off to the "red roof inn", they took a walkie-talkie just in case they got lost.
Unlike cell phones where service was spotty, the walkie-talkies worked just great.

What about walkie-talkies? Is that a no at Philmont? I've heard various reports. I know that the idea is to stick together but if you have to separate for any emergencies, I wonder if that might be a good emergency "supply" to have on you?

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. You probably won't have good enough reception to use it anyway, unless as one person posted, you are on top of Baldy or Phillips. We got one call out from on top of Phillips but lost signal after that.
Overall, I consider it safety gear and not something to use regularly. If you plan to really use it, you probably won't be able to. But if you need it and can, it will be worth it's weight in gold.
