RE: [Philmont]: desert suggestions

After dinner on that awfully long first day in base camp, there is an
advisors meeting. This is an excellent opportunity to speak with Mark and
get the final and official decision on just about anything.

A no from someone in logistics might turn into a yes from one of the
Chaplains if Mark makes the suggestion. Don't be bashful about asking but
understand that this isn't a case of the genie in the lamp. Usually
reasonable request made in a reasonable manner will be granted.

If what you need is complicated, get the request into Mark early in the day
(when you are in the office dealing with payments and the like.) This gives
everyone an opportunity to do things with a bit less stress.

My son had his 15th birthday on the trail last year and I asked at base camp
if there was anything I could do to get him a cake or something special
while out at one of our stops. I offered to pay anything needed and all they
said was NO, NO, NO ETC...

We got to our stop on the night of his birthday and what happens?? A boy
from another Troop on the same itinerary has his birthday that day also and
they sent a cake out to them. I was absolutely furious.

Obviously this can be done but you have to talk to the right people.

> We are Expedition 612. Our last night is at Miners Park. It is also my
son's 16th birthday. He has kind of mixed emotions. He thinks it is a neat
way to spend his birthday, but he is bummed that he does not get to take his
driving test that day.

dinner that night. Something that is not real difficult or time consuming
(and does not weigh a ton since I will be carrying it the entire way), but a
step above what we will have had the previous several evenings.
