On one of our treks a few years back, a member of our crew celebrated a
birthday on the trail. One of the advisors in our group brought a
backpacker's oven that can be used to bake things (like a small birthday
cake) on top of a backpacking stove. We brought supplies from home to
bake a small cake on the trail in his oven. We planned to pack them with
us. When we mentioned this to the logistics people, they asked what day
the birthday was and then offered to arrange for us to pick up our extra
supplies as part of our first food pickup, which just happened to be on
the crew member's birthday. We were even able to surprise the young man
with the cake and a few items supplied by his parents as treats (M&M
candies and an extra disposable camera, along with a birthday card). It
made the day for the birthday boy. FYI: We practiced baking cakes in the
oven before we left home.
Take the supplies, ask to have them with your food pickup, if they say
no, pack the extra stuff. I bet you can get your crew to help out. Ours
even managed to keep it a secret until the lad's birthday.
YIS,
Mike
