You can very easily make your own azimuth/paceing exercise. Lay it out on a
piece of
graph paper. Your baseline (the rope on the ground) could be north/south.
Set the
start/finish points every 10 feet (use paper plates along the rope). Draw
some lines
representing the legs connecting a few of the points. Measure the angles
with a protractor
(remember azimuths are measured clockwise from magnetic north). Scale the
distances
with a ruler. Tell your scouts the distances and azimuths of each leg. You
know where they
should end up.
A much better way of honing map and compass skills for Philmont is to get
your crew out to
an orienteering meet. Local orienteering clubs set up courses for the public
using very
detailed topographic maps. Find a club near you at www.us.orienteering.org
