At base camp your ranger will have everyone go through their belongings and
make recommendations as to what should and should not be taken on your hike. I
agree the only thing you use a knife for is opening packaging or possibly to
cut a rope or moleskin. The 12 of us in my trek got along fine with 2 single
bladed small jack knives and an appropriate stove repair kit. All of which
when put together weighed less than the leatherman
