RE: [Philmont]: Other Sharp Objects (or Knives continued)

My son attended Philmont in 2002 and really enjoyed the axe throwing at
Clear Creek. The crew could have spent ages at Clear Creek with the
black powder and the axes, but it looked like rain and they had to get
on to Wild Horse.

Last weekend he went to a flea market with his grandparents and came
back with a throwing axe. He has been practicing for Philmont 2004 ever
since. "Dad, where can I get a big stump?" There is absolutely nothing
more alluring to a pre-P&G scout than something large and sharp that can
be thrown and stuck.

<snip> personal opinion, I think sheath knives are not practical for
Philmont and it seems the scouts tend to want to do knive throwing, etc,

with them that isn't safe. I discourage them on campouts and trips.
They can buy them, and locking blades at some scout shops so I would

agree that BSA doesn't prohibit them but I still don't think they are
necessary.
