Tom,

Not sure if you were looking for a list of pros/cons of different camera
types or looking for a recommendation on a specific camera.

Here are some pros/cons.

Disposable (film)
- Pros: low cost to purchase, not as easy to damage, if you loose one
you're not out $$$, very light weight, float
- Cons: picture quality, no zoom capability, need multiple cameras
depending on how many pictures you plan to take, need to hang cameras in
bear bag, if sharing pics you will need to make multiple copies, not as
easy to email or load to website.

Point & shoot (film)
- Pros: better picture quality, potential zoom capability, fairly
durable
- Cons: carry extra batteries, carry extra film around, hand film in
bear bag, film can get lost, electronics could fail in rain, doesn't
float, if sharing pics you will need to make multiple copies, not as
easy to email or load to website, cost of camera if lost

Digital (no film)
- Pros: good picture quality, potential zoom capability, durability
dependent on camera type, you can take tons of extra pics and delete
those you don't want at the end of each day or when you get home, no
film, easy to share pics by making everyone there own CD, easy to email
and load to website
- Cons: need to carry extra batteries which are typically heavier,
durability dependent on camera type, added electronic complexity could
lead to failure due to handling or rain, doesn't float, cost of camera
if lost

As far as recommendations. I'm not fond of disposable cameras,
especially for memorable trips like Philmont or BWCAW. I have always
been fond of Olympus (film or digital). I currently own an Olympus C-750
(10x optical) and really like it. I have friends who own the Cannon S400
(3x optical) and A80 (3x optical) and really like them. The S400 is
great due to being so compact and light. The C-750 is a bit bulkier and
heavier but has great zoom capability.

Hope this helps,

Mark

Subject: [Philmont]: Camera Suggestions

We are going to trek at Philmont this summer and I was wondering about
suggestions for a camera.

Small Lightweight?
Digital?

Thanks in advance for your comments.
