Re: [Philmont]: Camera Suggestions

I've taken three different cameras to Philmont.

The first one was a Nikon F3. It took excellent photos but was a little
heavy. BTW, I've also used this camera at Northern Tier and the Florida
Sea Base and it did well during those trips, and many other Scouting trips
too. Just an excellent all round and very rugged camera.

When I lost vision in my "focusing" eye in '96, I obtained a Nikon 8008
auto focus model and have used it at Philmont several times during Autumn
Adventure, Kanik and at the PTC. Another nice camera but somewhat heavy,
especially when using the flash attachment.

My latest "toy" is an Olympus C-750 digital camera. I selected this 4.0
Megapixel model over several other digital models because it has a 10X
optical zoom. I took this one to Philmont last month for Kanik. It was
so light that I wound up not being able to find it after reaching the back
country. After looking through all my "stuff" twice, I decided I had left
it back at base camp in one of our vehicles. I wound up "finding" the
camera in a freezer bag (also packed with clothes) as we were packing to
depart the back country on our final day at Philmont. I got a couple of
nice photos of Baldy with snow but that was about it. Now, I'll have to
find another excuse to go back to Philmont next year so I can use my new
camera. :-)

YiS,
