In 2001 I carried a 35 mm Canon, along with 10 rolls of film, and extra batteries. In 2003 I carried a Kodak EasyShare CX4300 digital, its both small and lightweight and took good pictures. As has already been said you can delete a bad picture if its digital, and you don't have to carry all the extra film. As for AA batteries I put a fresh set of Energizer Lithium batteries in the camera the day we left on the trail, and never had to change batteries the entire trek. Took over 300 photos and still had battery power when I got back home. (I did carry 1 spare set of batteries, the lithium batteries are pretty light weight). As has been said before on other subjects you need to find what works best for you. Both cameras worked fine for me however I liked the ease of the digital better. I still use both cameras at home and on weekend campouts, but for Philmont I will only use the digital from now on.
