Mark,
I carry a Fuji Finepix 4700 (purchased 2002 - 4 megapixels(?) using 2 AA batteries) and use 128meg cards. I now take all of my pictures on the highest resolution and get 74 pictures per card.
I carried this camera to Philmont in 2002, along with six 128meg cards. I took most pictures on high resolution, but took a couple of days on the middle resolution (204 pictures per card). I took a total of around 450 pictures during our entire trip (including pre-Philmont activities). I printed some of the landscape pictures taken at the middle resolution in 8"x10" size and had no noticable grain or pixel flaws.
My camera says I can take 725 pictures on one 128meg card at the lowest resolution, but I've never taken any at that resolution.
For most of the newer cameras, 4"x6" or 5"x7" will print very nicely with even the lowest resolution. Any larger prints will be noticably flawed.
I would suggest printing pictures taken at different resolutions BEFORE you go to Philmont. If you have a Costco near by, they really make great digital prints and are as cheap as any printer found on the net. I print all of my "good" pictures at 8"x10" size (Costco actually prints them 8"x12") and it costs me 1.99 for each print (can't find any printers that cheap on the web).

Subject: RE: [Philmont]: Camera Suggestions
I realize the number of photos you can get on a given memory card is dependant on the card size, resolution, etc., but i was wondering if anyone has a good rule of thumb or recommendations to maximize photos per card, yet not drop resolution so low as to be useless for anything but viewing on the computer. usually 4x6 prints are sufficient, but I could see someone possibly wanting a 5x7 print, or maybe even an 8x10 crew picture.
thanks,

I recently purchased a Nixon (CoolPix) 3100 to bring with... Extremely small and takes great photos. A group that went last year at a CoolPix 4300 and had an outstanding slide show of their trip. Our suggestion is one camera, digital, 128 meg card. Make sure you have an extra set of batteries (the rechargeable Lithium are the best) Burn a copy of the pictures for each attendee when you get home...
