I bought (actually my wife bought me) a Pentax IQZoom water resistant
camera in 2000 for my Boundary Waters trip. Great camera, great pix.
Can take a few drops and bounces, too. Only thing I don't like about it
is no lens cap. It's a little heavier and bulkier than Olympus zoom
equivalent (which I considered), but I selected the Pentax because it
felt more substantial--the Olympus just felt too light to get beat up.
Also, the Pentax had a little longer zoom.

I took this camera to Philmont in 2002. Whatever you decide on, make
sure it'll hold up to rain--you will get wet. With the water resistant
camera, I strapped the case to my left pack strap just above sternum
strap level. Camera was always only 2-3 seconds away from being ready
to shoot. I took an extra lithium battery and 10 rolls of film. I may
have swapped the battery but I don't think so. I carried 2-3 fresh rolls
of film in one exterior pack pocket each day for quick film changes. As
I finished a roll, I put it into the plastic canister the fresh roll
came out of, labeled the top with date of completion, and put it into my
personal ziploc bear bag. All fresh and exposed film went up in the
bear bag each night, but that wasn't a big deal since I kept it together
anyway. I shot my last few pictures of last roll of some magnificent
thunderstorms from the train eastbound for home.
