Philmont meals have known to be bland as they must suit the tastes and
dietary requirements of 1000's of individuals each day. Dehydrating food
also takes some flavor out of food. One way to add flavor back into your
food is to bring your own spices. If packaged properly, they won't add much
weight and they only increase the flavor of the meal. If you are doing the
big pot method, your flexibility to use spices is reduced. If you are
cooking with smaller pots, you can add during cooking in those pots who like
the same spice. Of course, there is always the option to add the spice
afterwards. In 02 I took some Lawry's, Emerils, garlic salt, and dehydrated
onions. One of our boys had those mini backpacker containers which had six
or eight different spices.

Subject: [Philmont]: emulating rehydration of one pot dinners
Dear Philmont Pholks,
As our expedition crews continues training for our big event this summer, we
want to try the turkey bag process which we learned here.
As observed from this list, the Philmont dinners appear to need only
rehydration and using the turkey bag seems like a great idea. Towards the
effort of simulating the experience prior to Philmont, does anyone have menu
suggestions for one pot meals that are commercially available (other than
the pre-packaged dehydrated food which is prohibitively expensive)? We
often make one-pot meals which require more cooking than simple rehydrating
so your suggestions are appreciated. I thought about pasta, but that
requires cooking not just rehydrating. Please help.
Thank you,
Steve Eisinger
