On Trek 24 in 2003 I took my Dimage 7 (5MP) digital. I carried 2 - 1GB
memory cards and took about 800 pictures.
Out of the 800 I got about 150 "keepers" for the crew. The camera is
pretty heavy but I was willing to carry the extra
weight in order to get the advantages of the camera. It has a 7x zoom
which I think is very important for the long
shots you see everywhere at Philmont. I was able to frame some photos
beautifully by zooming and didn't have
to resort to cropping (and the resultant lose of resolution). It uses
AA batteries which I think is very important
in the back country. There's nothing worse then draining your proprietary
battery and having no way to charge it.
The camera gets pretty heavy once the batteries are dead and you can't
take any more shots! I only use
re-chargeable NimH batteries in the camera. The new 2200--2300 AA mAH
ones give me about 250 shots
without the LCD. They are cheaper in the long run than lithium or
alkaline and certainly much more environmentally
friendly. Thomas Distributing (http://www.thomas-distributing.com/) has
really good prices. AA Lithium are the
lightest and most powerful by far but the most expensive. I use them in
my headlight. I've found the best prices
on ebay and the last time I bought some I paid $2 per battery.
